Most Italian lunch spots in Helsinki serve the same tired formula: a pasta of the day, a bread basket, and a glass of house wine that nobody asked for. You leave fed, but not satisfied.
There is a better kind of Italian lunch in Helsinki. One that actually tastes like Italy.
Where Italian lunch in Helsinki gets its soul back
We opened Retro Enoteca in September 2024 on Vuorikatu 16 in Kaisaniemi because we believed Helsinki deserved Italian food with real intention behind it.
Not Italian-inspired. Not Italian-adjacent. Italian food made by people who care deeply about getting it right.
- Fresh pasta made with genuine craft, not shortcuts
- Classic dishes like Cacio e Pepe prepared with the respect they deserve
- A menu that evolves with the seasons, not one that sits unchanged for years
This is Italian food in Helsinki that goes beyond the basics, every single lunch service.
A lunch menu built by people who know Italy
Our kitchen is led by Jesse Vottonen, the creative chef known from Ravintola Passio. Our concept and wine selection were built by Jussi Hukkanen. Our floor is run by Jari Paananen. These are not first-timers playing at running a restaurant.
What that means for your lunch:
- Every dish on the menu has a clear reason to exist
- Fresh pasta Helsinki visitors keep coming back for, made in-house with proper technique
- Traditional recipes modernised with skill, not gimmicks
- A tiramisu that reminds you why the original is still the best
When the people behind the kitchen have cooked this food their whole careers, it shows in every bite.
Wines at lunch – because Italians always do
A proper Italian lunch includes wine. That is not an opinion, it is just how Italy works.
We import our wines directly from small Italian producers, which means our list includes bottles you will not find anywhere else in Helsinki. Every wine was chosen to work with the food on our Italian lunch menu, not just to fill a list.
- Wines from carefully selected small-scale Italian producers
- Imported directly by us for exclusivity and quality control
- Staff who can guide you to the right glass without making it complicated
Whether you want a single glass with your pasta or a bottle to share, we have something worth drinking.
The atmosphere that makes you linger longer
We designed Retro Enoteca to feel like a place you discovered on a side street in Rome, not a restaurant built to turn tables quickly.
Every detail in our space was considered. Coat hooks made from old meat hooks. Retro refrigerators from the 1950s and 60s. Enamel signs sourced directly from Italian antique markets. Real vintage objects, not reproductions.
With fewer than 50 seats, every visit feels personal. This is a Kaisaniemi restaurant that rewards slowing down.
Easy to reach, open every day of the week
We are open seven days a week, including lunch every day. No planning required, no limited weekday windows to squeeze into.
Getting here is straightforward:
- A short walk from Kaisaniemi metro station
- Accessible by tram, bus, and metro
- Located at Vuorikatu 16, right in central Helsinki
Whether it is a Tuesday work lunch or a Sunday afternoon with friends, we are here.
Reserve your table at Retro Enoteca
We are an intimate restaurant with limited seats. If you want to guarantee your spot, especially for a group lunch or a longer evening, booking ahead is the smart move.
Walk-ins are welcome when space allows, but reserving your table at Retro Enoteca means you arrive knowing your table is waiting.
Come for Italian food in Helsinki that takes the cuisine seriously. Come for fresh pasta, a well-chosen glass of wine, and a room that makes you feel like you are somewhere worth being. Come for lunch in Helsinki that actually delivers on what Italian food promises.
