Where to eat in Kaisaniemi for an unforgettable night out

You want a night out in Helsinki that actually feels like something. Not another forgettable meal in a generic space, but a proper evening with great food, interesting wine, and a room that has real soul.

If you are looking for where to eat in Kaisaniemi, we have one answer for you: Retro Enoteca.

An Italian dining experience unlike any other in Helsinki

Italian food in Helsinki can feel safe and predictable. Retro Enoteca is neither of those things.

Our kitchen is led by Jesse Vottonen, the creative chef known from Ravintola Passion. The menu centers on fresh handmade pasta and modernized takes on Italian classics — dishes built with genuine craft, not convenience.

  • Cacio e Pepe made the way it should be — simple, precise, and deeply satisfying
  • Tiramisu that earns its place on the menu every single time
  • Seasonal dishes that reflect the Italian approach to cooking: let the ingredients lead

This is Italian food Helsinki deserves more of.

Wines you won’t find anywhere else in Finland

Most wine lists in Helsinki pull from the same familiar pool. Ours does not.

We import our wines directly, which means we can offer small-producer Italian wines that simply are not available anywhere else in Finland. Every bottle on our list has been chosen by Jussi Hukkanen to pair naturally with the food we serve.

  • Wines from small Italian producers you will not encounter elsewhere
  • A list designed to complement every dish on the menu
  • Staff who genuinely know the wines and can guide your choice

Whether you are a seasoned wine lover or just curious, our enoteca in Helsinki gives you something worth exploring.

A space with real character — not manufactured atmosphere

A lot of restaurants try to create atmosphere. We sourced ours directly from Italian flea markets.

The interior at Retro Enoteca features authentic vintage pieces — meat hook coat racks, retro refrigerators from the 1950s and 60s, and enamel signs, all brought back from Italian antique markets. The result is a warm, intimate space with under 50 seats that feels personal rather than produced.

When you walk in, you feel it immediately. This Kaisaniemi restaurant has a personality of its own.

The team behind the food, wine, and experience

Great restaurants are built by people who care. We opened Retro Enoteca in September 2024 out of a genuine love for Italian food culture, and that shows in every detail.

  • Jesse Vottonen — Head chef, bringing creative precision to every plate
  • Jussi Hukkanen — Concept creator and the mind behind our wine selection
  • Jari Paananen — Responsible for operations and the warmth of our front of house

This is not a restaurant that opened to fill a gap in the market. We built it because we wanted it to exist.

Perfect for every occasion — lunch, dinner, or a wine evening

Not every visit needs to be a big occasion. We are open seven days a week, including lunch, so you can make Retro Enoteca part of your regular rhythm in the city.

  • Lunch — A proper midday break with real Italian food, just steps from Kaisaniemi metro station
  • Dinner — A full evening experience ideal for dates, celebrations, or simply treating yourself
  • Wine evenings — Come with friends, explore the list, and let the night take its time

We are a short walk from Kaisaniemi metro and easy to reach by tram or bus. Getting here is the easy part.

Reserve your table at Retro Enoteca

We have fewer than 50 seats, which means the experience stays intimate — and tables do fill up, especially on weekends.

If you are planning dinner in Helsinki or looking for an Italian restaurant that goes beyond the expected, we would love to have you. Come for the pasta, stay for the wine, and leave with a reason to come back.

Find us at Vuorikatu 16, Kaisaniemi, Helsinki. Reserve your table and come see what we have been building.
