You’ve been burned before. A restaurant calls itself Italian, but the pasta comes from a bag, the wine list reads like a supermarket shelf, and the atmosphere feels like a theme park. Helsinki has plenty of those.
Retro Enoteca is not one of them.
Handmade pasta and classics done the Italian way
We built our menu around authentic Italian food Italians actually eat. Not a tourist-facing greatest-hits list, but dishes crafted with real technique and genuine respect for the source material.
- Fresh pasta made by hand, the way it has always been done in Italian home kitchens
- Classics like Cacio e Pepe served with the restraint and precision the dish demands
- A Tiramisu that reminds you why the original became iconic in the first place
- Traditional recipes reimagined with a modern touch by head chef Jesse Vottonen
Jesse comes from Ravintola Passio, one of Helsinki’s most respected kitchens. When he cooks Italian, he means it.
Italian wines you won’t find anywhere else in Helsinki
Most restaurant wine lists pull from the same distributors. You end up choosing between labels you already know from the supermarket, marked up twice.
We import our wines directly from small Italian producers. That means you get bottles that simply do not exist anywhere else in Helsinki.
- A carefully curated selection of small-producer Italian wines chosen to complement our menu
- Exclusive bottles sourced directly by our co-founder Jussi Hukkanen, who built the concept around the wine list
- Real variety across regions, styles, and price points, not just the usual suspects
If you care about what is in your glass, this is the place to care about it.
An atmosphere built from real Italian vintage
A lot of restaurants claim atmosphere. Ours is something you can actually touch.
Every detail in our space was sourced with intention. The coat hooks are made from genuine meat hooks. The refrigerators are original 1950s and 60s Italian models. The enamel signs came directly from Italian antique markets.
- Warm, intimate space with fewer than 50 seats, so every visit feels personal
- Authentic vintage objects that tell a real story, not a manufactured one
- An environment that works equally well for a quiet romantic dinner or a relaxed evening with friends
We wanted guests to feel like they had stumbled into a well-loved trattoria somewhere between Rome and Bologna. Based on the feedback we hear at the table, we think we got close.
Right in the heart of Helsinki, open every day
We are on Vuorikatu 16 in Kaisaniemi, a short walk from Kaisaniemi metro station and well connected by tram and bus. Getting here is easy.
And we are open seven days a week, including lunch. Whether you want a proper midweek pasta or a long Friday evening with a bottle of something special, we are here for it.
- Open every day for both lunch and dinner
- Steps from Kaisaniemi metro, trams, and bus routes
- A setting that fits a solo lunch, a date night, or a group wine dinner equally well
If you have been searching for real Italian food in Helsinki and keep coming up disappointed, come and see us. Reserve your table at Retro Enoteca and find out what authentic Italian dining actually feels like in 2026.
